Articles > School district drug policiesNowadays school district drug policies are getting more popular. School district drug policies are measures that administrators of schools put into place in order to discourage students from recreational drug use. During the decades of the war on drugs in the United States school drug and alcohol policies are growing increasingly strict in punishment and in the kinds of behavior regulated. Usually these policies are the part of comprehensive "Drug and alcohol" policies; they are particularly common in urban school districts. Some school districts include out-of-school and off-campus behavior in their policy's jurisdiction. Aspects of the policies include anti-drug education (e.g., "Just Say No" curriculum), random recreational drug testing, searches of lockers and personal cells, and punitive measures including suspension and expulsion. Random drug tests advocates state that it is not just a punitive measure, as random drug testing may assist eradication of occasional drug use among students. Opponents, however, are sure, that recreational drugs commonly used by students: alcohol, MDMA, and prescription drugs may be not detected by the drug tests or are metabolized within a short time span. According to officials from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy there are about 600 school districts in about 15,000 nationwide that use drugs of abuse testing procedures. White House officials similize drug testing to programs that screen for diseases such as tuberculosis; it is well-known that students who test positive don't face criminal charges. District drug policies mission statements: To develop and implement validated techniques for detecting and identifying recreational drugs. To conduct collaborative researches on issues of mutual interest and importance. To ensure the quality of drug testing programs through the application of established principles of quality control. To audit the results of the schools’ drug policies measures to assure quality and improvement.
